Why the Manila Police took care of the incident and not the SAF?Quote:Senior Supt. Agrimero Cruz, PNP spokesperson, said a committee had been formed to look into the case. He said that the police leadership had noted “defects” in the action against Mendoza.
These include the poor handling of the hostage negotiation, “side issues and events that further agitated the hostage-taker,” inadequate capability, skills, equipment and planning of the assault team, improper crowd control, and the noncompliance to media relations procedures in hostage situations.
“There are plenty of observations. Like the broadcasting live (of troops movements) and it was monitored (by the hostage-taker). There were a lot of usis (bystanders) during the assault and immediately after. The usis were there before the ambulances. These things have to be corrected,” Cruz added.
Cruz said that a Special Action Force was on standby but that authorities allowed the police on the ground to continue with the negotiations. “In a hostage situation, whatever force committed there should not be pulled out.”
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/nation/view/20100825-288620/Aquino-PNP-admit-mistakes-were-madeI don't buy that excuse. I would have allowed the Special Action Force to take over from the beginning and not just keep them on standby. Thats a lame excuse... when lives are at stake they should have utilized those guys. it was ground commander's call, they felt that Manila's Finest could handle the job... results say otherwise. A smaller, more prepared unit would handle this much much better.

Here's another head scratching incident...
From Cnn.com Moreno said when he arrived near the site of the standoff in the company of Mendoza's brother and the chief hostage negotiator, "All of a sudden, he kept on shouting, 'Don't let go until they give my gun back! Don't let go! Don't let go!' He just shout, one moment -- Captain Mendoza just fired his gun."
Wrong decision, this clearly was the turning point... this incident turned a calm situation into a violent one. Clearly another blunder in the hostage protocols we have here. Dapat isa lang kausap ng Hostage taker and thats the Negotiator.

may his soul rest in peace. BUT... that is not an excuse for taking innocent lives
Our police forces have shown again they are ill-equipped and not prepared to handle these types of hostage situations. Imagine handling tear-gas without a gas mask, not securing the area (there were civilians around the area, one them them was hit on the foot). Not controlling the media when they needed to. Arresting the hostage taker's brother was the tiping point. This was the worst case scenario - 8 innocent lives where lost.
Should we be more concerned with our reputation than with the innocent lives lost?

Went to Batangas this weekend, car was full with our bags and photo equip of our photographer, aircon blasting at #3, and sun was up and it was pretty hot. Sped up to 120kph-130kph and temp stayed stable at just below the 1/2" mark... went up anilao and it still stayed stable... on the way back, sped up to 140kph and it was still stable.
Here's what I did:
Went to Autotechnika to have the Lavramon procedure done, it was pretty straightforward, except that the mechanic broke the seal covering the thermostat. Found that out a couple of days later when I noticed that the coolant levels were dropping. Had it fixed at Speedyfix, good thing they were able to salvage most of the used water/coolant mix, then I added the Redline Water Wetter (used half a bottle) to the coolant mix just to see if it will help.
Didn't change the water pump. So I guess we can rule that one out for now as the culprit of this.
