you will need to cover all electrical components, sensors, and wirings that might get soaked and also you'll need some blower to dry out the wet components after cleaning.

you can visit this link:

Ditto on covering the sensors and electrical components like the alternator.

An air compressor will come in handy also to dry out your engine afterwards. Kerosene also comes in handy; wipe your greasy/blackened components before washing.

Afterwards, make it a habit to dust and wipe out your engine once or twice a week. With that your engine will hardly need any washing.

Washing your engine with running water is very tricky and if not done properly can lead to problems.

Just use an engine degreaser and rags to clean your engine.

using running water will be tricky, it can be done but not recommended. the "Proper" way of cleaning your engine bay would be to remove the battery, intake manifold to property degrease and clean hard to reach areas (not using running water), you'll need a toothbrush, big brush, bunch of rags, degreaser, kerosine, pliers, screwdrivers, clip removers, etc etc. Cover all the electrical components (e.g. Alternator) with plastic and the intake manifold to prevent water ingestion.

Prepare to spend the whole day cleaning your engine, it can be a tedious and exhausting job.

To make your life easier, you can bring it to a professional detailer to have the job done, sit back read a magazine and wait for about 5-6 hours (yes its gonna take that long), and oh don't go to gasoline stations, cuz they'll just use a pressure washer to wash your engine (not good).

But if you really want to detail your engine, by all means do so and post some before and after pics.
